In the aftermath of the First World War, John Anderson was tasked with investigating future air-raid precautions. By 1938, he had taken on a leadership role within the Government's Evacuation Committee. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he joined the War Cabinet as Minister of Civil Defence, his commitment to 'shelters for all' forever linking him to the iconic 'Anderson Shelter'. As an independent member of Churchill's cabinet, Anderson served as Home Secretary and later Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 1946, he assumed the role of Chairman of the Port of London Authority. On January 30th, 1952, he was welcomed into the House of Lords.
