Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable, a man born in Haiti circa 1745 and passing away in 1818, is widely recognized as the first citizen to call Chicago home. His father was a French sea captain and his mother an enslaved African woman. DuSable built a thriving trading post along the shores of the Chicago River around 1779. That small settlement eventually grew into the bustling metropolis known today as Chicago. A commemorative bust now stands at the site where DuSable's trading post once thrived.
