This marble bust was likely created in Italy during the early years of the 18th century. It portrays Heraclitus, a philosopher depicted as an elderly man. The theme is typical of the time period. Bust in marble shows Heraclitus as an old man with loose hair and beard, his head cast downward and turned to the right, tears flowing from his eyes. A rough-skinned cloak hangs over his left shoulder and is caught under his breast with a rope. His right shoulder remains exposed.
