Giovanni Gradenigo expired on August 8, 1356, as the fifty-sixth Doge of Venice, appointed on April 21, 1355. During his reign, a lasting peace was forged with Genoa by Venice. Gradenigo originated in Venice. He married Adriana Borromeo first and Marina Capello secondly. Before being elected, he served as podestà in Padua, Treviso, and Capodistria. His demonstrated loyalty to the Venetian Republic likely contributed to his election, as he succeeded Marin Falier's execution following a conjure. Two months after taking office, the Venetians sealed a lasting peace with Genoa, ending a long war that had proven unfavorable for Venice. Measures were taken during his reign to enhance the Republic's economic status, but in 1356 they found themselves embroiled in conflict both on the mainland and in Dalmatia, which would conclude under his successor, Giovanni Dolfin, with the unfavorable Treaty of Zadar. He perished in August 1356.
