Gerald Henry Rendall, a distinguished Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, was appointed as the first Principal of University College, Liverpool, and Gladstone Professor of Classics and Ancient History on June 11, 1881. He also served as Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University from 1891 to 1895. Overwhelmed by administrative tasks, Rendall submitted his resignation as Principal on December 14, 1892, but the appointment of MacCunn as Vice-Principal and provision of secretarial support kept him at Liverpool until December 1897, when he left to become Headmaster of Charterhouse. Shortly after leaving University College, he was ordained, and upon retiring from Charterhouse in 1911, he settled in Dedham, Essex, where he became an honorary Canon of Chelmsford Cathedral and published a series of books on Shakespeare. He passed away in 1945, bequeathing to the Library his extensive book collection built up during research on Marcus Aurelius, which included his acclaimed translation of Meditations - Marcus Aurelius Antoninus to himself, accompanied by an introductory study on stoicism and the last of the Stoics (Macmillan, 1898), as well as his Shakespeareana collection.
