Liszt made a name for himself across Europe during the early 19th century thanks to his incredible skill on the piano. As a close friend and supporter of many composers from that era, he helped launch the careers of Frédéric Chopin, Richard Wagner, Hector Berlioz, Robert Schumann, Camille Saint-Saëns, Edvard Grieg, Ole Bull, Joachim Raff, Mikhail Glinka, and Alexander Borodin. As a composer in his own right, Liszt was one of the leading figures of the New German School (Neudeutsche Schule). His extensive body of work left a lasting impact on his fellow composers, foreshadowing many 20th-century innovations and developments. Among his most significant musical contributions were creating the symphonic poem, developing thematic transformation through his experiments with musical form, and pushing boundaries in harmony to create something entirely new.
