The marble bust of Francis Seymour-Conway, expertly crafted by Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey, was commissioned by his widow as a lasting tribute to her late husband. The artwork then made its way into the possession of Sir John Murrey Scott through bequest, before being sold at Christie's auction house in 1913 for a substantial sum. It eventually came to rest within the walls of The Wallace Collection, acquired by the Art Fund for £4,048. Francis Seymour-Conway, 1st Marquess of Hertford, was a prominent figure in British politics and society, known for his skill as a courtier and his distinguished career as a politician.
