This painting showcases Claudius, a Roman emperor who ruled with great power from 41 to 54 AD, making him the first Roman ruler born outside Italy's borders. Interestingly, his portrait was skillfully altered from a statue of his predecessor and nephew, Caligula. Although the artist changed the fringe and facial features, they left the top and back of Claudius' head untouched in the original sculpture.
