thingiverse
This is a 3D scan of a porcelain bust of renowned scientist Charles Darwin, from the impressive collection of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. The bust was crafted around the turn of the 20th century by skilled artisans Robinson & Leadbeater from Staffordshire, England. Darwin's likeness is proudly mounted on a small square base with the word 'DARWIN' elegantly moulded in the base. Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882) made an indelible mark on science with his groundbreaking contribution to Alfred Wallace's theory of Natural Selection. A devoted husband and father, Darwin skillfully balanced his family responsibilities with the meticulous study of the specimens he brought back from his extensive travels. Background This was one of ten Museum objects scanned in 3D for Hack the Collection, a groundbreaking public program featured at the 2014 Sydney Design Festival. The program matched ten visionary contemporary Sydney designers with ten thought-provoking objects from the Museum's collection. Designers spent two intense days in the Festival FabLab creatively manipulating the 3D object files to design their own innovative hacked interpretations for all to see. At the conclusion of the weekend, the designers' remixed objects were skillfully 3D printed on MakerBots and displayed alongside their original counterparts. We envision our collection as a treasure trove of raw assets waiting to be tapped for inspiration. We enthusiastically encourage you to download and remix our collection as you take it in exciting new directions.
