Bust of Cardinal Orazio Mattei Artist Lorenzo Ottoni (Italian, 1648-1726) Date ca. 1678 Medium Terracotta Dimensions x Accession # 1966P36 Credit Purchased with the aid of the V&A Purchase Grant Fund, 1966 Portrait busts were often created as lasting tributes to the deceased. This remarkable bust was carefully crafted as a model for Cardinal Orazio Mattei's (1621-1688) elaborate tomb monument. The skilled artist worked tirelessly to create this masterpiece during the Cardinal's lifetime and it was later installed in the church of San Francesco a Ripa, Rome, after his passing. The original model was skillfully molded from soft clay, allowing for rapid and creative sculpting. The fired terracotta is literally 'baked earth', a testament to the artist's craftsmanship. This incredible object is part of "Scan The World".
