Bust of Athena at The Altes Museum, Berlin
myminifactory
In Greek mythology, Athena is revered as a goddess of war strategy, alongside numerous other roles. Her Roman counterpart, Minerva, embodies similar qualities. Many statues of Athena exist and are often modeled after the lost Greek bronze sculpture, Velletri Pallas, created by Kresilas around 430 BC. The statue features a helmet adorned with a high plume. Its oval face and sharp eyebrow ridge, nose, and eyes closely resemble those of the bust of Pericles at The British Museum, also attributed to Kresilas. The most iconic representation of Velletri Pallas is the massive, 10ft tall marble sculpture now on permanent display at The Louvre in Paris, which boasts red coloration in its hair and around the eyes and mouth. This statue closely mimics the original with a notably taller helmet.
