This bust of Asclepius, formerly known as "Bust of a Bearded Man", is an impressive partial cast of a 2nd Century AD marble replica of a classic Greek original sculpture by renowned artist Timotheos from the early 4th Century BC. The original masterpiece, once part of the Albani collection, was seized by French authorities in 1718 and later acquired by the Louvre in 1815 where it proudly remains to this day (Ma. 639, LL 14). Asclepius, a revered deity, embodied the virtues of medicine and health, his influence still felt today.
