As a student of Socrates, Antisthenes began his intellectual journey by mastering the art of rhetoric under Gorgias before enthusiastically embracing Socrates' teachings. He took the moral aspect of Socrates' philosophy to heart, advocating for a simple life guided by virtue. Later scholars regarded him as the originator of Cynic philosophy.
