Marble. From Palazzo Massimo, Rome. Now in Hadrian's Villa (Tivoli, Italy). Hadrianic (117-138 d.C.). Antinous, a Bithynian youth and lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian, was a figure of great importance. After his mysterious death - drowned in the Nile - he was deified. Antinous' likeness with Osiris was also identified due to the manner of his death. The cult of Antinous rapidly spread throughout the Roman Empire. Many excellent sculptural examples of Antinous' likeness continue to survive to this day.
