The true identity of a rare terracotta bust remains shrouded in mystery. This youthful figure adorned with an intricately designed breastplate is now remarkably bronzed, possibly serving as inspiration for a lost bronze masterpiece. Its distinctive bulbous base hints that it was originally destined for a specific setting, potentially a grand tomb. Meanwhile, the Pollaiulo brothers were making their mark as skilled painters, engravers, and sculptors in 15th-century Florence. The London-based Italian firm of Franchi and Son created this cast with remarkable precision. In the 19th century, plaster casts became highly sought after by artists who recognized the importance of reproducing iconic works of sculpture and architecture for educational purposes. A special substance was applied to the original artwork, followed by a plaster mold that would be used to create multiple copies. These reproductions were often sold to aspiring artists, while later in the century they found their way into art colleges as valuable study tools. Today, we can appreciate this remarkable cast, attributed to Giovanni Franchi and Son, circa 1867. The original terracotta piece is proudly displayed at the Museo Nazionale (Bargello) in Florence.
