Bust of a woman, "The Oxford Bust"
myminifactory
This sculpture is a replica of an authentic marble piece housed at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England. The artwork is a 17th-century mashup, combining two Roman copies of ancient Greek originals from classical times. The base bears a striking resemblance to depictions of Amazon warriors and served as inspiration for George Frederic Watts' famous sculpture, "The Wife of Pygmalion." The head is believed to be a Roman adaptation of the classic Aphrodite of Pheidian style (circa AD 50-200). Collectively, this bust has been dubbed the "Oxford Bust" or, in some cases, misidentified as Sappho – though the bare breast does not align with the traditional conception of the poet.
