Jacob Epstein was born in New York after his Jewish parents relocated from Russia to start a new life there. He later enrolled in Parisian schools before making London his home in 1905. Two years later, he earned British citizenship. Epstein's bold sculptures were unlike anything seen before. Early on, his career was marked by controversy when he used eighteen nude figures to adorn the British Medical Association building in London, sparking a huge scandal. Lewis's department store commissioned one of Epstein's final sculptures, Liverpool Resurgent, which can still be viewed today on the corner of Renshaw and Ranelagh Streets.
