Bust of a male

This striking white marble bust, created around 110-120 AD, was unearthed near Ostia, a Roman city. Its weathered, drooping features unmistakably convey the advanced age of the individual depicted on this Roman portrait sculpture. The man's hairstyle, combed forward over his forehead and above his ears, allows historians to pinpoint its creation to a period spanning approximately A.D. 90-110, possibly during the reign of Emperor Trajan (A.D. 98-117). While many private Roman portraits mimicked the emperor's style, the exceptional quality of this portrait suggests that the subject may have been related to or closely connected with Trajan. This bust has surprisingly endured minimal damage over time.
