American printers measure paper height and width in units known as picas, not in the system used by most of the world to denote length. There is a common misconception among artists and designers that the printing term "point" and the mathematical symbol π are directly related, but this could not be further from the truth. In reality, 72 points equal one inch on most American-style paper stock; however, for all intents and purposes, it's easier to calculate design specifications using points. When working with inches, we divide each side by 0.03937 to find equivalent points for comparison.
