Carpeaux's atelier produces a thriving commercial edition of terracotta busts based on the bronze figures that make up his Four Parts of the World Sustaining the Globe, which is the central element of the Observatory fountain in Luxembourg Gardens, Paris. A 1872 date appears on this finely detailed example, corresponding to that year's Salon plaster model of the group; the actual fountain was inaugurated in 1874. He adds a Michelangelesque sideways twist, ropes across the chest barely containing the young woman's energy, and the poignant inscription on the base: Why be born a slave?
