Business Card Design
thingiverse
This a work in progress. I am experimenting with different settings and text to achieve the best lettering. This is my first design for a business card, but overall I think it looks great - aside from letters and numbers, of course. Comments and input are welcomed! If you have experience making small text look good please share your expertise! UPDATE 3/19/15: I made a silver version with an extrude subtract by .6mm. The total thickness is 1mm. You can see that the Redbird logo is completely removed. I also increased the text size quite a bit. UPDATE 3/25/15: I successfully achieved red text on top with a nice transition effect. I added a square off to one side so I could change the filament while it was filling the box. The last picture shows my current design - the top has transparent red while the bottom has opaque red. (The top is version 4 and the bottom is version 5.) UPDATE 4/21/2015: After fine-tuning different flow rates and retraction rates, I finally found the perfect combination. My finalized business card design is shown in the last three photos - Overall thickness of card is 0.5mm. (First layer was .2mm thick while second 2 layers were .15mm thick.) The overall layer height with text is 0.8mm and the flow rate for my printer was set to 670 with a retraction rate of 1.5mm. UPDATE 4/23/2015: Cover photo now features the final design! The second photo shows the first ever attempt at this business card design - all in black! UPDATE 7/5/2015: Newest cover photo is actually the brand new, finalized design (or so I think!). You can see the previous, old final design in the second photo. To achieve the smaller text I used a .2 mm nozzle and also gained it from a fresh Slic3r version with a unique fill pattern! UPDATE 8/1/2015: This business card design has been reworked to give a whole new look to my logo! Take a look at the second photo shown - still some issues getting that fill perfect. UPDATE 9/16/2015: I have successfully added a QR code that directly links to my personal 3D Hubs webpage. First picture shows this new addition - now with improved QR functionality! The instructions below refer to how the card is made. The business card is a robust, strong item at one millimeter thick (2 thin layers at .3mm and initial layer was .4mm). I'm experimenting using extrude subtract procedures to see just what this does to my text style. It is relatively pliable but you could snap it with enough pressure applied! Also, I made use of the NX 9.0 design software - then used Slic3r for slicing and employed an octagram spiral pattern.
