Bunny Science PAPR Respirator Design by Guy Kuo, MD Anesthesiologist. The Bunny Science PAPR Respirator is a specific embodiment of a patent-pending Personal Protection Equipment. It's licensed strictly for non-commercial build for frontline workers who don't have access to commercial PPE. This respirator extends the usage of FDA-approved anesthesia viral filters to create a hooded PAPR. As a full-head covering PAPR, it defends against aerosol, droplet, and splash threats from all directions. • The Bunny Science PAPR isolates users via positive pressure instead of requiring a perfect face-to-mask seal. Masks require a perfect facial seal to protect users. Even bear stubble defeats a mask seal. Some people simply cannot use an N95 mask because they cannot pass fit testing for leaks. PAPRs avoid this usage pitfall. * The Bunny Science PAPR extends the use of FDA-approved viral filters. These are ubiquitous in the operating room setting and have provided higher than N99.99+ filtering for many years. I do not propose the use of new, unknown, or unproven filtering materials. Design Highlights • Provide filtered air via FDA-approved ventilator viral filters * COMPLETELY protects entire head and face against airborne and splash risks * Uses positive pressure to maintain isolation even without a perfect seal * Uses disposables that are readily available * Dramatically lower flow requirements compared to traditional PAPRs * Field buildable * Able to create positive pressure seal even using FDM 3D parts The hood is a plastic bag placed over the head and secured around the neck. The Bunny PAPR provides airtight penetrations through the bag for inspiration and expiration. A breathable environment is at positive pressure. Expiration ports are unidirectional flow valves, but typically valve function is never engaged due to continual positive pressure. A fan draws room air through anesthesia viral filters. This frees the wearer from work of pulling air through filters. The fan is powered by a 12-volt battery pack or AC adapter. If configured with VB48Max filters (one inflow, one outflow), filtering in both inflow and outflow directions enables very comfortable wear WITHOUT a surgical mask. Developmental Testing The Bunny Science PAPR has been verified against nebulized N95 test aerosols for proper isolation. To simulate worst-case test conditions, test aerosol was directed at air intake, exhausts, and neck seal. Physiologic monitoring for CO2 clearance, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate was verified as sustainable using patient care monitors and continuous gas sampling analysis. User ability to wear system for over 11 hours is confirmed. Wearers can perform tasks without experiencing any adverse effects. Important Notes The Bunny Science PAPR is not yet a regulatory-approved device. Use of this PAPR respirator is at your sole discretion and risk.
