P.38-J Lightning "Bullet Plane" - WWII-Era Trench Art (Submitted by: R. Nix, Concord, VA) Trench art burst onto the scene during WWI's downtime, giving soldiers on all sides a creative outlet and a way to pass time with whatever materials were available. Brass shell casings were a staple of trench art due to their abundance on battlefields and pliable nature, making many examples of this type of art form. This piece is a WWII-era creation depicting an American fighter plane made from .45 caliber and .50 caliber bullets, along with two full-size 30.06 cartridges. The wings are crafted from spent casings of the .50 caliber rounds. These three types of ammunition were widely used by the U.S. Military during WWII. Rusty Nix shares this unique piece.
