DM: A well stands proudly in the front yard, its classic design instantly recognizable. A bucket sits atop it, accompanied by a sturdy hand crank. As you gaze down into the well, you notice that it has dried up completely - and at the bottom lies a long sword with a jeweled hilt shining brightly. Player: I carefully inspect the rope and crank mechanism to ensure they're in good condition, then ask if my fellow adventurers can lower me down into the well to retrieve the sword. DM: The rope and crank appear strong, with no signs of rot or excessive wear. However, the well is narrow, forcing you to stand on the bucket while keeping your elbows tucked in to navigate it safely. Other players: We slowly lower our companion down, carefully scanning for any issues with the rope or winch as we go. DM: About three-fourths of the way down, a vibration begins to emanate from the ground. Other Players: We immediately start pulling him back up! DM: You're lifted about 20 feet from the top when suddenly a dark grey shark-like shape bursts forth from one side of the well, bites the rope, and disappears into the other side. With the rope severed, you plummet to the bottom of the well, battered by rocks and dirt left in the wake of the beast. You sustain 6 points of falling damage and are severely injured due to the confined space. Then, the vibration begins to intensify once more - it's coming back for you.
