Building a DNA chain
pinshape
The main goal of this project is for students to successfully build a DNA chain using the bases. First, they will recreate it virtually and with attached pieces using a 3D design program. Then, they can assemble the DNA chain with printed parts, recreating the design using the dovetail mechanism. Students will gain insight into how the DNA chain forms through hands-on experience with physical models, which are useful for studying Biology or Chemistry. Additionally, when creating the digital version, students learn fundamental mechanics of their chosen 3D design software (rotation, translation, and scaling). The STEAM approach has been adopted to develop this project, incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. This interdisciplinary approach engages various subjects throughout its execution. Printing tips: printing at a scale of 30% is recommended. This lesson plan was submitted to the Create to Educate contest sponsored by Ultimaker and MatterHackers.
