A Buddha, according to schools that do not accept Mahayana doctrines and related sutras or that consider only teachings contained in the Agama-Nikaya, Abhidharma, and Vinaya as canonical, is an individual who has spent multiple lifetimes as a bodhisattva gradually freeing himself from attachments and the cycle of birth and death, achieving liberation during his last life and entering nirvana. Despite being liberated from the cycle of birth and death, he remains subject to illness, aging, and death. A Buddha's physical body is characterized by the Thirty-Two Major Signs (or "Thirty-Two Characteristics of Perfection", Sanskrit Dvadashamshadvara-Lakshana) that are however visible only to those who have sufficiently purified their karma.
