A Buddha, according to the schools that do not accept Mahayana teachings and related sutras or that consider only the teachings contained in the Agama-Nikaya, Abhidharma, and Vinaya as canonical, is an individual who after spending several lives as a bodhisattva has progressively freed himself from attachments and samsara, achieving liberation during his last life, and entered nirvana. Despite being liberated from samsara, he remains subject to disease, old age, and death. The physical body of a Buddha is characterized by the Thirty-Two Major Signs (or "Thirty-Two Characteristics of Perfection," Sanskrit Dvadashatrimasadvata-Lakshana) that are however only visible to those who have sufficiently purified their karma.
