Mucalinda, Muchalinda or Mucilinda, a legendary nāga, protected Gautama Buddha from the elements after his enlightenment. According to legend, four weeks after Gautama Buddha began meditating under the Bodhi Tree, dark clouds gathered and a torrential rain poured down for seven days. Unfazed by this turbulent weather, Mucalinda emerged from beneath the earth and shielded the Buddha with his majestic hood. When the storm had finally cleared, the serpent king transformed into human form, bowed humbly before Gautama, and joyfully returned to his palace.
