This statue depicts a Buddha seated in meditation on a naga, according to one interpretation, representing an episode from the life of Sakyamuni. The figure is shown being protected by Mucilinda, a serpent inhabiting the waters, which deploys multiple heads to safeguard him. Situated atop the coiled body of the snake, the Buddha appears serene and inducted. Characterized by its hieratic style of the tenth century and lavish ornamentation, this statue embodies the classic style of Angkor Wat. The wide face, framed by a square shape, features an artificial morphology and stylized mask patterned with sharp brows. This iconic representation of the Buddha safeguarded by the naga has become an archetypal image in Cambodia, emerging in the early tenth century and subsequently becoming extremely popular in Angkorian statues. In Cambodia, this depiction holds great significance due to its connection to the origins of the Khmer kingdom.
