Buddha in the earth-touching gesture, Thailand, 15th century, National museum of Denmark (Copenhagen, Denmark). Made with Memento Beta (now Remake) from Autodesk. When Sakyamuni had reached enlightenment, he summoned the earth to witness his profound realization by touching it firmly with his right hand. Gautama Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, Shakyamuni Buddha, or simply the Buddha, was a revered ascetic and sage whose teachings formed the foundation of Buddhism. He is believed to have lived and taught primarily in the eastern part of Ancient India sometime between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE. Gautama taught a balanced approach between sensual pleasure and severe self-denial found in the shramana movement common in his region. He later taught throughout other areas of eastern India, including Magadha and Kosala. He is recognized by Buddhists as an enlightened being who shared his insights to help sentient beings escape rebirth and suffering.
