Gautama Buddha, widely known as Siddhārtha Gautama or simply the Buddha, was an ascetic sage whose teachings laid the foundation for Buddhism. He is believed to have lived and taught predominantly in ancient India's eastern regions between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE. Gautama preached a Middle Way, rejecting both indulgent pleasure-seeking and the extreme asceticism of the śramaṇa movement prevalent in his time. His teachings spread across other parts of eastern India, including Magadha and Kosala. Two distinct streams of Buddhism entered Cambodia, with the earliest forms arriving alongside Hindu influences through Funan kingdom merchants. Later, a second wave of Buddhism was absorbed into Khmer culture during the Angkor empire, as Cambodia incorporated various Buddhist traditions from the Mon kingdoms of Dvaravati and Haripunchai.
