sketchfab
Date: 15th-16th century Found in Norway Total diameter: 39.4 cm Total thickness: 0.92 cm Collection: Medieval, National Museum of Denmark This model is a small center-gripped shield known as a buckler. Two bucklers from Norway are part of the collection at the National Museum of Denmark, given as gifts in 1813 by Skule Thorlacius. The body of this buckler consists of one piece of wood reinforced with an iron boss, rim, and various fittings. Originally equipped with two eyelets attached to the central handle, they secured a carrying strap or loop. Heavy and light trauma from sharp-edged weaponry is visible on the iron rim. A mark resembling St. Julian's mark is incised between the two iron rings on the back, possibly indicating the shield-maker's mark.
