Do you have a stash of spare change at home? Toss in 130 pennies to upgrade your vinyl's sound quality using this clever record stabilizer made from a modified CD player weight. For the MakerBot Ghostly Vinyl Challenge, I wanted to create something unique, functional, and straightforward to print. After exploring initial ideas, I realized no one had built a record stabilizer before, so I took on the challenge. Stabilizers are designed to improve sound quality by suppressing unwanted vibrations, leveling warped vinyl, and canceling out bass feedback caused by loud public addresses. For this project to work efficiently, it's crucial for record stabilizers to be heavy. I filled 130 pennies into this model (Buck Thirty) or five columns of 26 pennies each, making it the perfect weight. This brings the total weight to around 418 grams or 14.75 ounces. My research involved testing and printing various iterations before reaching the final product. The GhostlyRecordWeight and GhostlyRecordWeightTop models can be printed in any material but look great with a wood composite PLA finish, as I've done, or perhaps in Makerbot Khaki filament, Neon Orange, Translucent Purple, Jadeite, or Sparkly Dark Blue. You can successfully print with 30, 40, or 50 percent infill levels, but feel free to experiment for the best sound quality. Add your pennies - either 130 pennies or five rows of 26 pennies each. Snap on the top for a secure fit or glue if you need more security. To achieve an optimal fit, light sanding might be required.
