Bubble Wand
thingiverse
This project aims to introduce elementary aged students to engineering design, 3D software programs, and 3D printing through a fun and interactive experience. Students are given a task: designing a bubble wand to entertain their cousin during a visit. They must create a bubble wand that meets certain criteria and constraints. The challenge is clear: students need to design a bubble wand with structural integrity that can blow bubbles using the design they have created. To succeed, students will need to consider factors such as material usage, time management, and cost effectiveness. Students will be required to include their 2D design with labels and measurements, ensuring it meets all necessary criteria. The bubble wand must also demonstrate structural integrity, making it a sturdy and reliable product. Additionally, students will need to design the bubble wand using 3D printing software and print it on the 3D printer. Time is of the essence - students have only three minutes to present their final product. This project has been developed in conjunction with the Maine Center for Research in STEM Education, ensuring its effectiveness and relevance to real-world applications. Print Settings: Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator 2 Post-Printing: Project Title: Bubble Wand Babysitting Overview and Background: This project introduces students to the engineering process and 3D printing by guiding them through the creation of a bubble wand. This activity can be modified or extended to incorporate geometry math standards and science standards, making it suitable for various learning levels. Objectives: Learning Targets: * I can design a 3D model that meets multiple constraints. + Design a blueprint of a 3D model. + Evaluate the model based on given criteria and constraints. + Revise the model according to feedback and observation. Audience: This activity is designed for elementary aged students, primarily those in grades 3-5. However, it can be adapted for younger or older students as needed. Subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills are incorporated into this project. Skills Learned: Standards Addressed in this Project: NGSS: * 3-5-ETS1-1: Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost. * 3-5-ETS1-2: Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. * 3-5-ETS1-3: Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved. Lesson: Below is a teacher lesson plan, including resources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxJWin195kU http://www.kidsdiscover.com/teacherresources/bubbles-for-kids/ http://www.sciencebuddies.org/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVOnRPefcno Duration: This project should take approximately 5-6 hours to complete. Each section of the lesson plan provides a guide for the time required. Preparation: Students require no prior knowledge, as this activity is their first introduction to the engineering process, 3D software, and 3D printing. References: Teachers should be well-versed in TinkerCAD, 3D printing, and the engineering process before beginning this activity. Rubric and Assessment: Formative assessments include an exit ticket, progress in the student journal, progress in TinkerCAD, and teacher observations. The summative assessment is the student presentation, scored using a rubric attached to this document.
