This larger-than-life head, possibly a deathmask, is carved from marble with a bronze base by Geo Verbanck, born in Ghent on February 28th, 1881, and passed away in Aartselaar on December 12th, 1961. Verbanck is well-known for his sculptures made from bluestone, marble, sandstone, and bronze. He began his artistic journey in carpentry workshops before studying at the Royal Academy of Ghent and Brussels. As a professor and teacher in Dendermonde, he worked on rebuilding the courthouse in Ghent. Verbanck's work also includes designing monuments, medals, coins, busts, and drawings.
