A likely young specimen of the Dyer's Polypore, also known as Schweinitz's Butt Rot, Phaeolus schweinitzii, is discovered in the Pacific Northwest rainforest. This fairly common root and butt rot fungus typically infects conifers, especially Douglas-fir, and is highly valued by dyers for its source of yellow, orange, and brown dyes. The Shroom Scout finds it growing near the base of a conifer in this region.
