A brougham pronounced "broom" or "brohm" was a four-wheeled horse-drawn carriage built in the 19th century that featured an enclosed body with two doors, similar to a coach's rear section. Two people could ride inside, sometimes accompanied by extra fold-away seats in the front corners and a box seat for the driver and a passenger or footman up front. Unlike coaches, broughams had glazed front windows allowing occupants to see forward, while the forewheels were designed to turn sharply. A variant called a brougham-landaulet featured a collapsible roof from the rear doors backward. Many London broughams previously owned as private carriages were sold and repurposed as hackney carriages with painted-over coat of arms on the carriage doors, which were then commonly used in 19th-century London. The unique features of the brougham are strikingly similar to the "Conditions of Fitness" set by the London Public Carriage Office for taxis.
