The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in New York City, connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn over the East River. Completed in 1883 after being initiated in 1869, it was the first steel-wire suspension bridge ever constructed. Initially called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and the East River Bridge, it was eventually named the Brooklyn Bridge after a letter published in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in 1867. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972, this iconic bridge has a main span of 486.3 meters (1,595.5 feet) and was the longest suspension bridge globally upon its opening. Constructed by German immigrant John Augustus Roebling at a cost of $393,964,000 in today's dollars, it sadly claimed 27 lives during its building process.
