Featuring limestone, granite and natural cement, the Brooklyn Bridge's Gothic architecture is designed by engineer John Augustus Roebling. Tragically, he died due to injuries incurred at work. His son, Washington, then took over but was struck with decompression sickness from caisson work. As a result, Emily Warren Roebling, Washington's wife, stepped up to manage supervisory duties.
