During exercise, dust and sweat got into the oil. After exercising, the dirty oil was scraped off the body using a strigilis. A strigilis was mainly used by Etruscans, Greeks, and Romans. The origin of the strigilis is unknown. It probably came from Etruria. The Romans adopted the strigilis from the Etruscans and spread it throughout the Roman Empire.
