Miguel Hernández Gilabert emerged as a groundbreaking poet and playwright during the 20th-century Spanish literary scene, specifically within the influential Generation of '27 movement and the Generation of '36 movement. Born on October 30, 1910, in the economically disadvantaged town of Orihuela, located in the Valencian Community, Hernández Gilabert's early life was marked by poverty and limited access to formal education. Despite these challenges, he made a significant impact with his debut poetry collection at just 23 years old, eventually gaining widespread recognition before his untimely demise. Unable to escape the clutches of Spain following the Republican surrender, Hernández Gilabert faced repeated arrests due to his unwavering anti-fascist stance, ultimately leading to a death sentence that was miraculously commuted to a staggering 30-year prison term. The harsh realities of his imprisonment in various notorious jails took a devastating toll on his health, ultimately succumbing to tuberculosis in 1942.
