The bronze griffin head dates back to the third quarter of the 7th century BC, originating from Greek culture. It stands at a height of 10 3/14 inches (25.8 cm) and is made of bronze. The artwork is classified as a bronze sculpture and can be found in Gallery 150 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under accession number 1972.118.54, which was part of Walter C. Baker's bequest in 1971. Griffin heads often adorned cauldron rims on colossal vessels dedicated as votive gifts in Greek sanctuaries between the eighth and sixth centuries BC. These cauldrons were supported by tripods or conical stands, with over six hundred bronze griffin heads, mostly from the sanctuaries of Zeus at Olympia and Hera on Samos, known today. The head exhibited is considered one of the finest examples found.
