• What does your name mean? The Brontosaurus name means "thunder reptile." • When and who discovered it? The first Brontosaurus was found by paleontologist Othniel Marsh in the western United States in 1870, then taken to Yale's Peabody Museum in New Haven for study. • What size was it and how was it? It measured 22 meters long and weighed about 40 tons. The Brontosaurus is a sauropod, meaning it walked on four huge and sturdy legs, had a long and wide neck composed of forked vertebrae, with air sacs that reduced its weight. Its tail was long, much thinner than the rest of its family dinosaurs as well as the ribs, which were also longer. Based on scientific studies, it could be determined that they moved at a speed between 20 or 30 km/h; footprints found from these sauropods show that they could travel up to 20 to 40 kilometers in one day.
