The British Rail Class 08 is a diesel-electric shunting locomotive built by British Railways for general-purpose use. As BR's standard shunter, it became a common sight at major stations and freight yards since its introduction in 1952. However, Britain's rail traffic has undergone significant changes over the years, with most freight trains now consisting of fixed rakes of wagons and passenger trains mostly featuring multiple units that no longer require shunting assistance. As a result, many Class 08 locomotives have been retired from mainline service and stored, scrapped, exported or sold to industrial railways or heritage lines for preservation.
