The British Rail Class 55, a class of diesel locomotive, was built by English Electric in 1961 and 1962 for British Rail. Designed to operate on the high-speed express passenger services between Edinburgh and London King's Cross via the East Coast Main Line (ECML), these powerful engines earned the nickname "Deltic." The term originated from the prototype locomotive DP1 Deltic, named after its Napier Deltic power units, which provided the engine's remarkable speed and efficiency.
