Situated on the western side of the Brisbane CBD, it's comprised of various bridges and overpasses. The North Bank development aims to minimize the visual disruption caused by the expressway and recapture Brisbane for pedestrians once more. Spanning the entire western length of the Brisbane CBD from Coronation Drive to the Captain Cook Bridge at Gardens Point, this expressway covers an estimated 3 km before morphing into the Pacific Motorway that comes to a stop at the Gold Coast. Construction on the Riverside Expressway started in late 1968, when the pylons for the bridge were installed on the North bank of the Brisbane River. The bridge was completed in 1975. In September and October 2006, roadworks took place along the Expressway and adjacent structures, including the Captain Cook Bridge. Since its construction in the 1970's, maintenance on these structures had not been performed. On 17 October 2006, sections of the expressway were closed due to safety concerns regarding hairline cracks in the Alice St and Ann St ramps.
