A barn is an agricultural building, predominantly found on farms, serving multiple purposes. In North America, it houses livestock like cattle and horses, along with equipment and fodder, often storing grain too. The term 'barn' is often specific, such as in tobacco, dairy, sheep or potato barns. Contrastingly, in the British Isles, a barn stores unthreshed cereals and fodder; cow shelters are called byres/shippons, while horses reside in stables. On the continent, barns were part of integrated structures called byre-dwellings (housebarns in US literature). Barns can also be storage spaces, workplaces under shelter, and venues for activities like threshing.
