Breathing Filter Adapter for 3M re-usable respirator

A critical shortage of N95 disposable masks exists during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 3M reusable elastomeric mask is used in this critical period, but a supply problem with compatible P100 filters can occur. Medical breathing filters, also known as HME filters, are used in hospitals for patients requiring mechanical ventilation or intubation. Their viral/bacterial filtration efficiency is very high (99.99% or higher). They are also used for COVID-19 patients. We developed an adapter for medical breathing filters to be used with the 3M reusable respirator. This setup passed the quantitative fit test using the PortaCount Respirator Fit Tester 8038 (TSI Incorporated). This allows healthcare workers to have a contingency backup to protect themselves if they run out of disposable N95 masks while caring for COVID patients.
