The BRDM-2 is an armored reconnaissance and patrol vehicle, upgraded from its precursor the BRDM-1. Gorky Automobile Plant began serial production of the BRDM-2 in 1963 and continued to produce it until 1982, followed by a stint at the Arzamas Machine-Building Plant from 1982 to 1989. Licenses for manufacturing the vehicle were granted to Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. One major selling point of the BRDM-2 is its high degree of mobility - with its advanced all-wheel drive system allowing the vehicle to traverse rough terrain while also supporting its armor which effectively protects against bullets from small arms and shrapnel. The added feature that enables the car to accomplish more difficult maneuvers involves two additional wheels placed along the middle portion of the vehicle's frame. These can be retracted at need. Presently, BRDM-2 is utilized by more than 50 countries to varying degrees within their respective intelligence agencies. Soldiers also affectionately call it the "Bardak". Soviet mass production ceased in November 1989.
