The ship's participation included a major role during the Passage of Humait between Brazilian, Argentine and Uruguayan forces against Paraguay. The Bahia ship was renamed after the state of its service location, Brazil. The ship was completed on 22 January 1866 following its launch on June 11, 1865. The ship made headlines with five other warships participating in the Passage of Humait on February 19, 1868. Later that year, it underwent renovations, where its boiler system was upgraded and a bridge added between its turret and funnel.
